This true-blue party snack was created by The Culinary Institute of Norway, and inspired by the big taste of the USA. It’s nothing short of irresistible. Velvety, melted Jarlsberg in a crunchy, deep-fried crust, served with piquant tomatoes and a homemade barbecue sauce.
Make the tomatoes and BBQ sauce ahead of time.
Mix the tomatoes, olive oil, and basil together and season with salt and pepper. Bake the mixture in the oven at 180 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 hours.
To make the barbecue sauce, sauté the onion and garlic until golden, add the other ingredients and let the sauce simmer for 1½ hours.
To make the deep fried Jarlsberg. Place the flour, eggs and breadcrumbs in three separate bowls. Divide the Jarlsberg into four. Dip the Jarlsberg first into the flour, then the eggs, into the flour for a second time, into the eggs again, and finally into the breadcrumbs. Chill in the freezer for 30 minutes. Heat the oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and fry the Jarlsberg until golden brown.
Serve the fried Jarlsberg hot with the baked tomatoes and BBQ sauce.
