This chunky salad - said to have been invented at the Ritz-Carlton - is undeniably a meal in a bowl. Top-notch cheese and ham are essentials, balanced with lettuce leaves, hard-boiled eggs, red-ripe tomatoes and crunchy croutons. Finally, a generous tossing in a tangy vinaigrette makes this reliably satisfying salad, absolutely irresistible.
Cut Jarlsberg and ham into thin sticks, cut tomatoes into 8 boats, and cut the boiled eggs into boats as well. Dice the toast into small cubes. Tear the lettuce into medium-sized pieces. Carefully toss the salad ingredients and serve in a bowl or on plates.
To make the vinaigrette, finely chop the shallot onion and mix together with the rest of the vinaigrette ingredients. Drizzle the salad with the dressing to taste.
